Thunderhead Road

A studio oil painting that I made after returning from a plein air event in Colorado National Monument. It was a breathtaking experience overall and an adventure! A cloud system was forming, waiting for us to drive into, as we headed across the desert while on an amazing road trip through the western U.S. It was full of rain yet the sun was shining through the edges and still lighting the landscape. This cloud expressed the conflicting bittersweet emotions I felt as we left this area and began our trek home to the northwest. I tried to paint what I was feeling.
